Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
